From City Hall
to Civic Centre, Norwich: Strategy for a Makeover
A public presentation of ideas concerning the future of
Norwich City Hall and its surroundings. The event is to be
held on the evening of 6th June 2007, in
the Music Room of the Assembly
House, and will take the following form:
6.30pm: an
exhibition preceding the meeting, illustrating the
proposals.
7.30pm: explanatory introduction by the vice-president of
the Norfolk Association of Architects
7.40pm: illustrated talk by MICHAEL INNES,
originator of the ideas presented.
8.45pm: open discussion chaired by the NAA
9.45pm: chairman's closing remarks.
We believe
these ideas offer a sound basis for the regeneration of
City Hall in a manner that will
bring the building out of its imminent obsolescence
without damaging its appearance and setting.
We are suggesting that, by enlarging the City Hall's
accommodation, it would be possible to avoid any need for
comprehensive relocation in response to demands for
additional space. The Council of the
Norfolk Association of Architects believes these ideas
have a persuasive logic of affordability
and sustainability, and therefore merit the earliest
discussion. This is why we have undertaken to
to sponsor the exhibition and to organise the meeting: we
are inviting you to share and help
develop this vision for the city centre's future. Our
hope is that the principles outlined, respecting
the constraints of environmental and economic
sustainability, may be accepted as an appropriate
basis for immediate action by the City Council. The
objective is to revitalise the building that marks the
social, economic and political focus of Norwich, lifting
it to a status commensurate with the citizens' cultural
ambitions.
